  • Lisa LaFrance — Founder of the LaFrance Project & Former President of Impact the Palm Beaches. Lisa will share her experiences in nonprofit leadership and empowering communities through service.

  • Matthew Swift — Co-founder, President & CEO of Concordia. Matthew will bring his perspective on building cross-sector partnerships, innovation, and global leadership.

30 New Volunteers Join Through USF Tampa Job Fair

The Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program participated in the USF Tampa Fall 2025 Part-Time Job Fair, connecting with students eager to make a difference in their community.


Thanks to the incredible support of the USF–H.U.G. Club, the event was a resounding success — with 30 new volunteers signing up to help young readers grow in confidence and literacy. 


Events like this highlight the power of collaboration between universities and community programs to build brighter futures together.

   

H.U.G. Joins Salve Regina University Involvement Fair

On Friday, September 5, 2025, the Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program joined students, faculty, and campus organizations at the Salve Regina University Involvement Fair on Gerety Lawn.


Our CEO, Janine Broussard, had the opportunity to meet students and share how H.U.G. is expanding opportunities for literacy and mentorship.


We’re excited to welcome new Verified Reading Mentors from Salve Regina who are ready to Be The Difference™ for children and families.

   

Building Connections at USF St. Petersburg Tabling Event

On Wednesday, September 4, 2025, the Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program joined the USF St. Petersburg Tabling Event, connecting with passionate students eager to make a difference in their communities this fall and spring.


Our Director of Florida Schools, Danielle Blaxton, represented H.U.G. and shared how students can Be The Difference™ by supporting literacy and mentorship.


We are grateful to USF St. Pete for the invitation and to every student who stopped by our table — your energy and commitment inspire us to keep growing readers and leaders.

   

H.U.G. Highlight from Kentucky


Our KY Director, Shayla Branch, had the joy of visiting with Stephanie Volpert, Family Resource Coordinator, to present our H.U.G. & WIN poster along with Kroger gift cards for student game winners.


The excitement is already spreading as students gear up for some fun, friendly competition—making literacy not only impactful but engaging and enjoyable.


These remind us of the power of combining learning with joy and the importance of keeping students motivated both inside and outside the classroom.

   

Intern Spotlight: FAU Students Connect with H.U.G. Leadership

Coffee, conversation, and connection were on the table as Danielle Blaxton, Director of Florida Schools, met with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) students for a coffee chat. The gathering sparked meaningful discussions on literacy, leadership, and the power of service.


Moments like these remind us that the best ideas often emerge when passion meets purpose. We’re excited to see these talented FAU students step forward, ready to Be The Difference™ in their communities.

   

H.U.G. Participates in Keiser University Spotlight Event in Fort Lauderdale

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program was honored to participate in the Keiser University Spotlight Event in Fort Lauderdale.


Our Director of Florida Schools, Danielle Blaxton, connected with students and faculty to share how H.U.G. transforms literacy, builds community, and creates meaningful opportunities for growth.


We are grateful to Keiser University for welcoming us and look forward to the partnerships and possibilities ahead!

   

USF H.U.G. Club Hosts Bag Stuffing Party for Florida Students

The USF H.U.G. Club came together for a special Bag Stuffing Party, preparing more than 40 backpacks and pencil pouches filled with books, supplies, and words of encouragement for H.U.G. students across Florida.


These small but meaningful acts of service help set children up for a brighter, more confident school year.


We are grateful to our USF Bulls for showing what it means to Be The Difference™ through community, teamwork, and impact.

   

H.U.G. Showcases Career Pathways at University of Louisville Career Fair


The Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program had an incredible day at the University of Louisville 2025 Fall Internship & Career Fair.


A special thank you to Herb and Shayla Branch, Director of Kentucky Schools, for representing H.U.G. with passion and energy. They connected with UofL Cardinals eager to explore career pathways, internships, and service opportunities that make a lasting impact in children’s lives.


Together, we’re building stronger communities and empowering the next generation to thrive through literacy.

   

The Villages H.U.G. Club Hosts Training & Fellowship Gathering


The Villages H.U.G. Club hosted a wonderful gathering on September 19, bringing together mentors and volunteers for an afternoon of growth, connection, and inspiration.


Highlights of the meeting included:
Training on the new H.U.G. curriculum
Sharing strategies to support student learning
Building connections with one another
Strengthening the impact of their mentoring roles

H.U.G. Connects with Students at UofL Honor’s Student Council Fair


The Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program proudly joined the 9th Annual Honor’s Student Council Fair at the University of Louisville, connecting with bright, driven students and exploring opportunities to make a difference together.


Shayla Branch, Director of Kentucky Schools, represented H.U.G. with passion, sharing how students can Be The Difference™ through literacy, mentorship, and community engagement.


It was also inspiring to connect with Chris Clements, who represented several nonprofit organizations, and to meet outstanding Honor’s students from the School of Psychology.


These highlight the power of partnerships in shaping futures, strengthening literacy, and empowering tomorrow’s leaders.

     

H.U.G. Impact in Action


We’re proud to share the growing impact of the H.U.G. Reading Program across Florida, Kentucky, and beyond! Every number represents a story of progress — children building literacy skills, tutors gaining experience, and communities coming together to Be The Difference™.

  • 91% student success rate with measurable literacy gains on national tests.

  • Students learned an average of 3.74 new words per session, exceeding national growth averages.

  • In Eminence, KY, 70% of H.U.G. students outperformed their peers, with 62% meeting Stretch Growth Goals.

  • 96% of tutors reported improved well-being and 86% improved digital literacy.

We’re also celebrating expansion into Rhode Island, training 60 seniors in digital literacy, and partnerships with 34 universities across the U.S.

Together, we’re building brighter futures — one reader, one mentor, and one community at a time.

H.U.G. Tutor Well-Being Results


The H.U.G. Reading Program doesn’t just transform literacy outcomes — it also strengthens the well-being of our mentors. Our 2024–2025 Well-Being Survey revealed powerful results:

  • 96% of tutors reported improved well-being and happiness.

  • 86% saw growth in digital literacy and connectivity.

  • Feelings of isolation dropped to 20% among H.U.G. tutors, compared to the national average of 32.1% (CDC).

  • Only 14% reported a lack of companionship, far below the U.S. average of 24.8%.

These findings highlight how H.U.G. fosters not only stronger readers, but also stronger communities of connection, purpose, and belonging.
