30 New Volunteers Join Through USF Tampa Job Fair

The Help Us Grow (H.U.G.) Reading Program proudly joined the 9th Annual Honor’s Student Council Fair at the University of Louisville, connecting with bright, driven students and exploring opportunities to make a difference together.
Shayla Branch, Director of Kentucky Schools, represented H.U.G. with passion, sharing how students can Be The Difference™ through literacy, mentorship, and community engagement.
It was also inspiring to connect with Chris Clements, who represented several nonprofit organizations, and to meet outstanding Honor’s students from the School of Psychology.

We’re proud to share the growing impact of the H.U.G. Reading Program across Florida, Kentucky, and beyond! Every number represents a story of progress — children building literacy skills, tutors gaining experience, and communities coming together to Be The Difference™. -
91% student success rate with measurable literacy gains on national tests. -
Students learned an average of 3.74 new words per session, exceeding national growth averages. -
In Eminence, KY, 70% of H.U.G. students outperformed their peers, with 62% meeting Stretch Growth Goals. -
96% of tutors reported improved well-being and 86% improved digital literacy. We’re also celebrating expansion into Rhode Island, training 60 seniors in digital literacy, and partnerships with 34 universities across the U.S. Together, we’re building brighter futures — one reader, one mentor, and one community at a time.

H.U.G. Tutor Well-Being Results
The H.U.G. Reading Program doesn’t just transform literacy outcomes — it also strengthens the well-being of our mentors. Our 2024–2025 Well-Being Survey revealed powerful results: -
96% of tutors reported improved well-being and happiness. -
86% saw growth in digital literacy and connectivity. -
Feelings of isolation dropped to 20% among H.U.G. tutors, compared to the national average of 32.1% (CDC). -
Only 14% reported a lack of companionship, far below the U.S. average of 24.8%. These findings highlight how H.U.G. fosters not only stronger readers, but also stronger communities of connection, purpose, and belonging. | |
